What to wear (and pack) for a beach or boat day
A boat day is half beach day, half going out. Dress for sun, wind and wet decks, and you'll still look put together at sunset.

The outfit
- Swimsuit you can move in. Boats mean climbing ladders and jumping off the swim platform. Pick something secure: a supportive bikini top or a one-piece.
- Easy cover-up. A sarong, linen shirt or crochet dress you can pull on for lunch or the ride back.
- Light layer. It gets windy and cool on the water, especially after sunset. Bring a linen button-down or thin sweater.
Shoes
Leave the heels on land; they damage decks and they're a slipping hazard. Most captains prefer you go barefoot on board. For the dock, wear flat sandals with grip or slides you can kick off.
The packing list
- Reef-safe sunscreen (reapply after every swim)
- Sunglasses with a strap, and a hat that won't blow away
- Towel, a dry bag for your phone, and a hair tie
- Water. More than you think.
- Motion-sickness tablets if you get queasy
- A soft bag rather than a hard suitcase; they're easier to stow
For sunset
Swap the cover-up for a slip dress or a white set, add gold jewelry and you're dressed for dinner at the marina.
